PREVALENCE OF DEPRESSION (GDS-15 SCALE) IN DEMENTIA PATIENTS AT THE NATIONAL GERIATRIC HOSPITAL
Main Article Content
Abstract
Objective: To investigate the prevalence of depression and related factors in patients with dementia treated at the National Geriatric Hospital. Subjects and Methods: A cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted on 89 dementia patients, both inpatients and outpatients, at the National Geriatric Hospital from January 2024 to May 2024. Depression was assessed using the GDS-15 questionnaire. Results: The prevalence of depression in dementia patients was 40.5%. Significant factors associated with depression included sleep disorders (OR = 4.929; p < 0.001) and agitation/aggression symptoms (OR = 2.722; p = 0.023). On the other hand, regular physical exercise was associated with a lower rate of depression (OR = 0.418; p = 0.046). Other factors such as gender, age, occupation, and education level showed no statistically significant association with depression. Conclusion: Depression is common in dementia patients, especially in those with sleep disorders and agitation. Encouraging physical exercise may help reduce the rate of depression in this patient group.
