EPIDEMIOLOGY OF HAND, FOOT AND MOUTH DISEASE IN THAI NGUYEN PROVINCE IN 2023

Abstract
Background: Hand, Foot, and Mouth Disease (HFMD) is a common infectious disease among children under 5 years old, and its incidence has been increasing in recent years.Objectives: To describe the epidemiological characteristics of hand, foot, and mouth disease in Thai Nguyen province in 2023. Methods: A cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted on the epidemiological characteristics of hand, foot, and mouth disease in 503 cases in Thai Nguyen province in 2023. Results: According to reports from the Thai Nguyen Center for Disease Control, a total of 503 cases of hand, foot, and mouth disease were recorded in 2023. Among these, the incidence in males was 65.0%, significantly higher than in females (35.0%), with a ratio of approximately 1.9:1. The majority of cases occurred in children aged 1 to 3 years, accounting for 75.5%. Geographically, Phu Yen city had the highest number of cases at 160, while Dong Hy district reported the lowest with 9 cases. The month with the highest incidence was September, with 250 cases, and there was a significant outbreak in September and October, indicating a seasonal pattern in autumn-winter. Notably, 90.7% of cases had no clear source of infection, with only 9.3% having a clear epidemiological history; the primary sources of infection were friends, acquaintances, or family members. Conclusions: Hand, foot, and mouth disease occurred in all districts and cities of Thai Nguyen province, with the highest concentration in Phu Yen city. The primary affected age group was children under 5 years, with a peak incidence occurring in September and October.
