Abstract

Objective: To evaluate the caregiving practices of mothers with children under 2 years old suffering from acute diarrhea at Nam Dinh Provincial Children's Hospital in 2024. Subjects and Methods: The study subjects were 142 mothers with children under 2 years old diagnosed with acute diarrhea, receiving treatment at Nam Dinh Provincial Children's Hospital. A cross-sectional descriptive study design was used. Caregiving practices were assessed based on a tool developed from the Acute Diarrhea Care for Children manual published by Vietnam Education Publishing House and the Ministry of Health’s guidelines on integrated care for sick children. The total score for caregiving practices was 18 points. Mothers who scored 60% or higher (i.e., 10 points or more) were considered to have correct caregiving practices, while those with scores below 60% (i.e., 9 points or less) were considered to have incorrect practices. Results: The overall rate of mothers with adequate caregiving practices was 51.4%, while 48.6% had inadequate caregiving practices for children with acute diarrhea. Among those with correct practices, the highest score was 18 points, and the lowest was 7 points, out of a maximum of 18 points. Conclusion: The caregiving practices of mothers with children under 2 years old suffering from acute diarrhea at Nam Dinh Provincial Children's Hospital still have significant limitations. There is a need to strengthen health communication and education on acute diarrhea for mothers to improve caregiving practices in a more positive direction.
