Main Article Content
Abstract
Purpose: To evaluate the efficacy of 1% Terpinen-4-ol eyelid wipes in improving symptoms and microbiological test results in patients with anterior blepharitis. Subjects and Method: This clinical intervention, open-label study involved patients diagnosed with anterior blepharitis who met the inclusion criteria and agreed to participate. They were treated with the Terpinen-4-ol 1% eyelid wipe (Ocuvane® Plus) twice daily and followed up at 4 and 8 weeks. The primary outcome measures included changes in the symptoms scores, tear breakup time, ocular surface staining, and the severity of inflammatory manifestion, microbiological testing after treatment. All adverse events and patient satisfaction were also recorded. Result: From April to August 2024, 31 patients (3 male, 28 female) with a mean age of 52.1 years participated. Statistically significant reductions were observed in symptoms after 4 and 8 weeks of treatment. Signs of blepharitis, ocular surface staining, and microbiological test results improved, although tear brek-up time and ocular surface staining did not show significant changes. The rate of positive microbiological tests for bacteria, Pityrosporum and Demodex mite decreased significantly at both follow-up points. One patient discontinued treatment due to eyelid irritation, while the majority expressed satisfaction with the product. Conclusion: Eyelid wipes containing 1% Terpinen 4-ol reduces symptoms, blepharitis signs and improves the microbiological test results in the treatment of anterior blepharitis.
