EVALUATION OF ORAL MUCOSITIS COMPLICATIONS DURING AND AFTER RADIOTHERAPY FOR HEAD AND NECK CANCER

Abstract
Objective: This study aimed to evaluate the prevalence, severity, and associated factors of radiation-induced oral mucositis (OM) in head and neck cancer patients at Ho Chi Minh City Oncology Hospital. Methods: A descriptive analytical study was conducted on 84 patients between March 2023 and June 2024. The data were collected through weekly clinical evaluations during radiotherapy and one month after the completion of radiotherapy. Results: The prevalence of OM during radiotherapy reached 100%, with severity peaking in week 6. Long-term smoking habits, poor oral hygiene, and oral cavity cancer are significantly associated with the severity of oral mucositis. Conclusion: OM is a common complication in head and neck cancer radiotherapy. Close monitoring and timely interventions can mitigate its impact and improve patients' quality of life.
