NUTRITIONAL REGIMENS DURING THE FIRST 3 DAYS OF HOSPITALIZATION FOR SEVERE AND CRITICAL COVID-19 PATIENTS AT THE COVID-19 TREATMENT HOSPITAL UNDER HANOI MEDICAL UNIVERSITY HOSPITAL IN 2021-2022

Abstract

Objective: This study aimed to assess the nutritional status and nutritional regimens during the first 3 days of hospitalization for severe and critical COVID-19 patients at the COVID-19 Treatment Hospital under Hanoi Medical University Hospital. Methods: A cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted on 101 patients from October 2021 to October 2022. Data were collected from electronic medical records using nutritional status and refeeding syndrome assessment forms. Nutritional status was assessed using the GLIM criteria and laboratory indicators such as Albumin, Prealbumin, and Vitamin D. Nutritional regimens were described based on energy, protein, lipid, and micronutrients provided via enteral and parenteral routes. Results: The average age of the subjects was 73.18 ± 13.78 years, with 88.12% being over 60 years old. The rates of malnutrition assessed by Albumin and Prealbumin were 91.09% and 72.83%, respectively. Over the first 3 days, the proportion of patients receiving complete enteral nutrition decreased from 56.43% on the first day to 42.57% on the third day. The provided energy gradually increased over the days, reaching an average of 1058.69 ± 305.64 kcal (86% of recommended needs) on the first day and 1198.47 ± 318.29 kcal (97% of recommended needs) on the third day. Conclusion: Poor nutritional status is common among severe and critical COVID-19 patients. Enhancing nutrition and providing sufficient energy, protein, and micronutrients during the early hospitalization period play an important role in improving treatment outcomes.
