Abstract

Objective: To investigate blood insulin levels in type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) patients treated for over 5 years and evaluate the relationship between insulin levels and some characteristics of T2DM patients at Dien Chau General Hospital. Subjects and Methods: A cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted on 318 T2DM patients treated for over 5 years. Results: The average insulin level was 16.0 ± 4.6 µIU/mL, higher in females (17.1 ± 4.8 µIU/mL) than in males (14.5 ± 5.0 µIU/mL), with β = 0.35, p = 0.045. Linear regression analysis showed that the group of patients under 60 years old had the highest average insulin level (18.0 ± 5.5 µIU/mL) and positvely correlated with age (β = 0.35, p = 0.002); the group of patients over 70 years old had the lowest average insulin level (13.5 ± 6.2 µIU/mL) and negatively correlated to age (β = -0.25, p = 0.005), indicating that insulin levels decreased with age. The average insulin level of patients having diabetes over 10 years (14.5 ± 6.0 µIU/mL) had a significant negative correlation with disease duration (β = -0.3, p = 0.12). Conclusion: Blood insulin levels in type 2 diabetes patients are associated with age, gender and disease duration of over 10 years
