Abstract

Introduction: Musculoskeletal diseases are increasingly common, especially in the elderly, causing pain, disability, and reduced quality of life. NSAIDs are widely used for their analgesic and anti-inflammatory effects but pose risks of side effects and drug interactions, particularly with high doses or prolonged use. Objective: To investigate the patterns of NSAID use, identify factors related to NSAID drug interactions, and evaluate the irrationality of prescriptions containing NSAIDs in the treatment of musculoskeletal diseases. Materials and methods: A retrospective, cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted on 400 outpatient prescriptions containing NSAIDs for musculoskeletal diseases at Military Hospital 7A during the fourth quarter of 2023. Results: The disease was more prevalent in males than females (59.75% vs. 40.25%), with a mean age of 53.04 ± 12.64 years. Osteoarthritis was the most common diagnosis (44.50%). NSAIDs were mainly prescribed for 8–14 days (69.25%). Naproxen was the most prescribed NSAID (34.32%). Interactions between NSAIDs and proton pump inhibitors were the most frequent (7,00%). The number of drugs per prescription and comorbidities significantly increased the risk of NSAID-related interactions (p<0.001). Inappropriate NSAID prescriptions accounted for 9.25%. Conclusion: It is essential to guide patients on the appropriate timing of NSAID use, avoid combining multiple NSAIDs in treatment, and ensure prescriptions adhere to maximum dosage limits. For patients at gastrointestinal risk, combining NSAIDs with gastroprotective agents is crucial.
