Abstract

Objective: To assess the prevalence, severity, and characteristics of depression in older adults with Parkinson’s disease (PD). Methods: A cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted on 228 elderly patients diagnosed with PD at the National Geriatric Hospital. Depressive symptoms were assessed using the Geriatric Depression Scale (GDS-15). Results: The mean age of patients was 69.3 ± 5.4 years, with a female-to-male ratio of 1.5:1. The prevalence of depression among PD patients was 63.16%, with mild depression accounting for 38.16%, moderate for 19.74%, and severe for 5.26%. Among depressed patients, 78.5% felt their lives were empty, 70.6% experienced memory problems, and 80.3% reported a lack of energy. Conclusion: Depression is a common symptom in older adults with PD. Regular depression screening should be integrated into PD management to improve mental health and quality of life in this population.
