Abstract

Objective: To evaluate pregnancy outcomes in women with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) at the National Hospital of Obstetrics and Gynecology. Methods: A retrospective descriptive study was conducted on 40 medical records of pregnant women diagnosed with SLE who delivered at the National Hospital of Obstetrics and Gynecology between January 1, 2022 and December 31, 2023. Results: The mean maternal age was 30.2 ± 3.8 years, with an average disease duration of 5.03 ± 3.98 years. Notably, 90% of patients had been diagnosed with SLE prior to conception. The rates of preterm birth, intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR), and intrauterine fetal demise (IUFD) were 35%, 42.9%, and 12.5%, respectively. Preeclampsia was the most common maternal complication (22.5%), followed by renal involvement in 5 cases (12.5%) and thrombocytopenia in 2 cases (5%). A total of 35 women delivered live-born infants, with cesarean section being the predominant mode of delivery (88.6%). Among these, 4 cesarean deliveries were indicated due to disease exacerbation. No intraoperative or postoperative complications were recorded. Conclusion: Pregnancy in women with SLE remains high-risk for both the mother and the fetus. Close monitoring is essential for early detection and timely management of complications such as preeclampsia, preterm birth, IUGR, and fetal loss.
