Abstract

Background: Deep vein thrombosis (DVT) of the lower limbs is a common complication that increases the risk of pulmonary embolism and mortality in elderly stroke patients. In Vietnam, research on DVT in elderly patients with acute stroke remains limited. Objectives: To investigate the prevalence of lower limb deep vein thrombosis and its associated factors in elderly patients with acute stroke. Methods: A cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted on 106 elderly patients with acute stroke treated at Hospital 1A from May 2023 to April 2024. Thrombosis was assessed using compression Doppler ultrasonography. Results: Among the 106 elderly patients included in the study, 25 (23.58%) were diagnosed with lower limb deep vein thrombosis. Factors significantly associated with thrombosis included hospital-acquired infections and intracerebral hemorrhage. Conclusion: The study found that 23.58% of elderly patients with acute stroke had lower limb deep vein thrombosis. Hospital-acquired infections and intracerebral hemorrhage were significantly associated with the occurrence of thrombosis.
