Abstract

Objective: To describe the characteristics of gestational diabetes mellitus and some related factors of 199 pregnant women who visited the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Hanoi Medical University Hospital from October 2024 to May 2025. Method: A cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted on 199 pregnant women who met the sampling conditions and were interviewed using a pre-printed questionnaire at the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Hanoi Medical University Hospital. Results: The average age of pregnant women was 29.70 ± 4.14 years old. The proportion of pregnant women with a history of gestational diabetes was 1.0%, while no case of diabetes before pregnancy. In addition, 12.6% of pregnant women had a family history of diabetes. Only 22.6% of pregnant women had satisfactory knowledge of gestational diabetes (answering ≥80% of the total 54 questions correctly). Multivariate analysis results showed that pregnant women aged 35 years and older were nearly three times more likely to have knowledge of gestational diabetes than those under 35 years old (OR=2.94). Women with an education level above high school were twice as likely to have knowledge as those with a high school education or below (OR=2.05). Multivariate analysis results showed that pregnant women with a BMI ≥23 (overweight, obese) had a much higher rate of knowledge (OR=3.27); Pregnant women who have been diagnosed with gestational diabetes are also nearly twice as likely to have good knowledge compared to the group that has not been diagnosed (OR=1.99). Conclusion: The rate of pregnant women visiting Hanoi Medical University Hospital with good knowledge about gestational diabetes mellitus is still low.
