Abstract
Objective: This clinical study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of oral nutritional supplementation before and after surgery in patients with colorectal and gastric cancer at the Department of Gastrointestinal Surgery, University Medical Center, Ho Chi Minh City. Methods: This was an interventional clinical study. The intervention group included 80 patients with colorectal and gastric cancer at risk of malnutrition who were scheduled for surgery. They received oral nutritional supplements (ONS) from the outpatient stage until hospital admission for surgery, and continued to receive ONS postoperatively until discharge. Results: The intervention group showed an improvement in body weight from 51,6 ± 8,0 kg to 52,2 ± 8,1 kg (p < 0,001) and an increase in serum Prealbumin levels from 25,4 ,± 6,2 mg/dL to 26,4 ± 6,6 mg/dL (p = 0,049) from study initiation to preoperative hospital admission. Additionally, the intervention group had a shorter hospital stay (10,7 ± 3,4 days) compared to the control group (12,7 ± 5,4 days, p = 0,002). Conclusion: Oral nutritional supplementation before and after surgery helps improve preoperative nutritional status and contributes to reducing hospital stay in malnourished patients with colorectal and gastric cancer.
