Abstract

Objective: To determine the prevalence of oral diseases and related factors among elderly outpatients at University Medical Center Ho Chi Minh City in 2025. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted on 282 patients aged ≥60 years from January to June 2025. Data were collected through clinical oral examinations, assessing dental caries, tooth loss, gingivitis, calculus (CIS), and periodontal status (CPI), along with demographic factors. Results: Calculus (CIS 1–3) was present in 87.2%, tooth loss in 81.2%, dental caries in 67.4%, and gingivitis in 58.2%. Severe periodontal disease (CPI 3–4) affected 16.7%. Dental caries was associated with female gender and age ≥70; tooth loss with male gender, older age, and lower education; gingivitis with male gender, younger age, lower education, urban residence, and smoking; higher CIS scores with male gender, older age, rural residence, and smoking; and CPI 3–4 with female gender and lower education (all p<0.05). Conclusion: Oral diseases are highly prevalent among the elderly, with multiple sociodemographic and behavioral factors influencing their occurrence. Early detection and targeted preventive programs are needed to improve oral health in this population.
