PATIENT’S PERCEPTION OF RISK FACTORS OF LUNG CANCER AT CAN THO CITY ONCOLOGY HOSPITAL
Main Article Content
Abstract
Objective: To survey patients' perception of lung cancer (LC), identify social factors related to perception, and propose solutions to raise community awareness. Research methods: The survey was conducted from May 2024 to October 2024 through direct interviews with 50 patients being treated for LC. Results: A large proportion of patients have correct awareness of risk factors for LC such as smoking (72% agree), exposure to pesticides (64% agree), inhaling cigarette smoke (48% agree) or polluted dust (46% agree). They also have correct awareness of the practice, prevention and treatment of LC such as 96% of respondents agreeing that medicine has effective measures to help screen for LC, or 84% agreeing that regular health check-ups will detect LC early. Although patients have correct awareness, the rate of patients participating in screening is still low. On the other hand, there are still 22% of patients who are treated with traditional medicine or 12% who still believe in "spirituality" such as praying, going to temples, fortune telling to treat lung cancer. Conclusions: Patients' awareness of risk factors of LC is relatively high, but the rate of participation in screening is still low, so hospitals need to have communication programs to raise public awareness of LC in the future.
