Abstract

Objective: To determine the change in quality of life scores and related factors of patients with lumbar disc herniation before and one month after surgery at the University Medical Center at Ho Chi Minh City. Subjects and methods: Prospective study, longitudinal follow-up, before-after comparison on patients with lumbar disc herniation who were indicated for surgery from February 2021 to July 2021. Data were collected by face-to-face interviews with patients using the EQ-5D-5L (European Quality of Life 5 Dimensions 5 Levels) toolkit and the VAS (Visual Analogue Scale) pain scale. Results and conclusions: There were 50 patients with lumbar disc herniation who were eligible to be included in the study. The mean age is 52.7 ± 13.4; Females make up 60%. The mean quality of life score according to the EQ-5D-5L scale before surgery and one month after surgery was 0.43 ± 0.2 and 0.89 ± 0.08, respectively. The mean VAS pain scores before surgery and one month after surgery were 8.76 ± 1.6 and 2.2 ± 1.4, respectively. There is a statistically significant relationship between quality of life after surgery and overweight and obesity with p<0.05.
