Abstract

Objective: To survey the prevalence and level of depression, anxiety and stress among mountainous ethnic minority junior high school pupils of Thai Giang Pho School, Thai Giang commune, Bac Ha district, Lao Cai province. Method: A cross-sectional descriptive study on 330 pupils of Thai Giang Pho Junior High School, Thai Giang Commune, Bac Ha District, Lao Cai Province using the DASS 42 screening scale filled in by pupils themselves. Results: The highest percentage of pupils showed anxiety (44.5%), followed by stress (29.7%) and depression (25.8%). Pupils with major depressive symptoms were mild and moderate (42.4% and 40%), severe and very severe (14.1% and 3.5% respectively). Pupils had mainly mild and moderate anxiety (27.4% and 43.2%) and severe and very severe anxiety accounted for 16.4% and 13%. Pupils with stress expression were mainly mild and moderate (51% and 43.9%), severe stress was 5.1% and no pupils showed a very severe stressful level. Conclusion: Depression, anxiety and stress are quite common manifestations and most of them are moderate to mild. Early counseling and psychological support is needed for pupils with these symptoms
