Abstract

Multiple chronic conditions (MCCs) are the presence of two or more chronic diseases, reducing quality of life, especially in the elderly. Objective: To assess the characteristic of multiple chronic conditions in the elderly at Nghe An General Friendship Hospital. Subjects and methods: A cross-sectional descriptive study conducted on  338 patients aged 60 years and older at Nghe An General Friendship Hospital from June 2022 to March 2023. Result: The average age was 72.71 ± 8.09; the proportion of female accounted for 48.8% and male accounted for 51.2%. Multiple chronic conditions rate was 83.4%, of which 0-1 diseases accounted for 16.6%; 2 diseases accounted for 31.3%; 3 diseases accounted for 23.6%; 4 diseases accounted for 17.1% and 5 diseases accounted for 11.2%. The percentage of patients with hypertension was highest (59.5%), following by lipid metabolism disorders (40.2%), diabetes mellitus (25.4%), heart failure (23.1%), dementia (20.4%), arthritis (16%), osteoporosis (18.6%) and other diseases. Conclusion: Multiple chronic conditions rate in the elderly at Nghe An General Friendship Hospital was high. Routine screening for multiple chronic diseases is necessary to improve the quality of patient care.
