Abstract

Objectives: Systematic review and meta-analysis of studies on the effectiveness of single-visit endodontic treatment of teeth with apical periodontitis. Subjects and methods: Systematic review and meta-analysis were performed with documents searched from Pubmed, Cocharne, Google Scholar and ScienceDirect. The research question was: in patients undergoing root canal treatment for apical periodontitis (teeth with an infected root canal system), does single-visit endodontic treatment compared to multiple endodontic treatments lead to a lower treatment success rate (as measured by clinical and radiographic interpretation). Results: A total of 260 studies were found through search terms from the databases. After reviewing research titles and abstracts, removing duplicate studies and screening studies according to selection criteria, 10 documents were considered for evaluation according to the objectives and scope of the research scope. Nine studies were included in the meta-analysis. Conclusion: Single-visit endodontic treatment seems to be slightly more effective than multiple-visit endodontic treatment, with a 4.88% higher healing rate. However, the difference in healing rate of these two groups is not statistically significant (OR = 1.29, 95% CI: 0.74-2.45).
