CLINICAL, PARACLINICAL FEATURES AND TREATMENT OUTCOMES OF ADULT PATIENTS WITH BRONCHIAL FOREIGN BODY

Abstract

Object: To describe the clinical, paraclinical features and treatment outcomes of adult patients with bronchial foreign body.Methods: Cross section study conducted on 81 adult patients with bronchial foreign body at Bach Mai Hospital and Hanoi Medical University Hospital. Results: average age was 56 ± 13 years old (from 15 to 86 years old), more common in men (59.3%), almost patients had right bronchial foreign body (70,4%). The common clinical symtomps include: cough with sputum (50,6%), chest pain (45,7%), dyspnea (30,9%), fever (29,6%) and haemoptisis (14,8%). 9.8% of patients had neurogical or mental defect. Organic foreign body was common than norganic foreign body. The most popular foreign body was piece of animal bone (54.3%) and seed (30.9%). 90.1% of patients were removed foreign body by flexible bronchoscopy. 8.6% of patients were indicated both of flexible and rigid bronchoscopy to removed foreign body. And 1.3% of patients were undergo lung lobectomy. Conculsion: The most common bronchial foreign body in adult patients were piece of animal bone and seed, relate to neurogical or mental defect. Flexible bronchoscopy was the most popular method to remove bronchial foreign body.
