TREATMENT OUTCOMES OF MILD AND MODERATE ACNE USING CREAM CONTAINING LUDWIGIA EXTRACT IN CAN THO, 2023-2024

Abstract
Background: Acne is a prevalent dermatological condition, particularly affecting adolescents. The management of acne has become increasingly challenging due to the rising incidence of antibiotic-resistant opportunistic pathogens. Consequently, the exploration of natural compounds possessing antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, and antioxidant properties has emerged as a promising research avenue, with the aim of developing safe and sustainable treatment modalities. Among these natural agents, Ludwigia (genus Ludwigia, family Onagraceae) has garnered significant attention due to its demonstrated pharmacological properties. Objective: To evaluate the therapeutic outcomes for mild and moderate acne using cream containing Ludwigia extract at Can Tho University of Medicine and Pharmacy Hospital and Hoa Minh Clinic. Methods: A cross-sectional descriptive and non-controlled clinical intervention study was conducted on 31 patients diagnosed with acne, who were treated with the cream containing Ludwigia extract from December 2023 to December 2024. Results: Among the study cohort, 54.8% were male, and 93.6% were aged between 12 and 19 years. Regarding disease severity, 74.2% of patients were classified as having mild acne, whereas 25.8% (equivalent to 8 patients) were diagnosed with moderate acne. Efficacy evaluation revealed that at week 4, 45.2% of patients exhibited a moderate therapeutic response, while only 25.8% achieved a good response. By week 8, the percentage of patients demonstrating a good response increased to 51.6%, concomitant with a reduction in the moderate response rate to 22.6%. With respect to adverse effects, 2 cases (6.5%) reported transient itching at treatment initiation, which resolved within a few days, and 2 cases experienced an exacerbation of acne at week 4, with notable improvement by week 8. Conclusion: The initial use of cream containing Ludwigia extract has achieved good results in treating mild and moderate acne..
