ANATOMICAL EVALUATION OF THE ANGLE OF THE LATERAL LAMELLA OF THE CRIBRIFORM PLATE ON PARANASAL SINUS CT- SCANS

Abstract

Background: The lateral lamella of the cribriform plate (LLCP) is a critical anatomical structure in the anterior skull base, characterized by variability in thickness and slope, contributing to surgical risks during endoscopic sinus surgery. This study aimed to assess the anatomical characteristics of the LLCP angle using paranasal sinus CT-scans to provide essential preoperative information for surgical risk assessment. Methods: A cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted on 150 adult patients at Nhan Dan Gia Dinh Hospital from December 2024 to June 2025. LLCP angles were measured using 128-slice CT-scans and classified according to Gera’s criteria (Group I: >80°, Group II: 45°-80°, Group III: <45°). Data were analyzed using SPSS 26.0 software. Results: The average LLCP angle on the left side (60.6°±12.4°) was significantly greater than on the right side (57.1°±13.2°) (p=0.02). Group II accounted for the highest proportion (78.3%), followed by Group III (15.7%) and Group I (6%). Asymmetry in LLCP classification between sides was observed in 24.7% of patients. No significant gender differences were identified. Conclusion: Significant variability and bilateral asymmetry exist in the LLCP angle. Evaluating this angle along with Gera and Keros classifications on preoperative paranasal sinus CT-scans is crucial for minimizing surgical complications during endoscopic sinus surgery.
