ASSESSMENT OF MANDIBULAR LINGUAL AND INFERIOR ALVEOLAR CANAL IN THE HORIZONTAL RAMUS REGION USING CONE-BEAM COMPUTED TOMOGRAPHY IN ADULTS AGED 18–30 YEARS

Abstract
Objective: To describe the morphology of the mandibular lingula and the inferior alveolar nerve canal in the horizontal ramus region using cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) in adults aged 18 - 30 years. Subject and Method: A cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted on 89 patients (43 males, 46 females) who met the inclusion and exclusion criteria at the Dental Clinic, Medical Center, University of Medicine and Pharmacy, Vietnam National University. Result: The mean diameter of the inferior alveolar nerve canal at the distal root of the mandibular second molar and the mandibular first molar was 2.52 ± 0.67 mm and 2.38 ± 0.59 mm, respectively. The mean distance from the canal to the buccal cortical plate was 5.51 ± 1.27 mm at the mandibular second molar and 4.99 ± 1.29 mm at the mandibular first molar. Canal diameter and buccal cortical distance tended to be greater in males. The triangular shape of lingula was the most commonly found (58.99%), followed by the truncated (20.22%), nodular (11.23%), and assimilated type (9.56%). No statistically significant differences were observed between genders or sides. Conclusion: The present study reveals notable individual variability in the morphology of the inferior alveolar nerve canal and the mandibular lingula. Therefore, individualized assessment of these critical anatomical structures using CBCT is essential for safe surgical planning and intervention in oral and maxillofacial procedures.
