Main Article Content
Abstract
Objectives: Prevalence of gastrointestinal surgery patients at risk of refeeding syndrome (RS) and some associated factors. Methodology: A cross-sectional descriptive study on 104 patients aged 18 years and older. The patients were evaluated risk of RS in the first 24 – 72h from hospital admission. Results: The prevalence of patients at risk of RS accounted for 42.3%, of which 63% had significant risk, 37% had moderate risk. There was a difference between the 2 groups with and without risk in terms of weight, mean BMI, percentage of weight loss at 1 month, 6 months, serum potassium, pyloric stenosis, esophageal cancer (p<0.05). Upper gastrointestinal tract surgery, obstructive/semi-obstructive diseases increased the risk of RS by 17 times (95% CI: 2.9 – 99.5; p < 0.001) and 13.3 times, respectively (95%CI: 4.2 – 42.4; p < 0.001). Conclusions: The risk of RS in patients with gastrointestinal surgery was very high. Upper gastrointestinal tract surgery and conditions with obstruction/semi-obstruction of the gastrointestinal tract are risk factors for RS.
