PREVALENCE OF HIGH-RISK HUMAN PAPILLOMAVIRUS IN THE SQUAMOUS CELL OROPHARYNGEAL CANCER PATIENTS

Abstract

Objectives: Identifying HR-HPV prevalence and assessing the relationship between HR-HPV and patient characteristics in patients with oropharyngeal cancer. Materials and methods: A cross-sectional descriptive study conducted at Can Tho Oncology Hospital from November 2022 to July 2023 on 30 patients with oropharyngeal cancer who had histology of squamous cell carcinoma (OPSCC). FFPE real-time PCR can be used to determine HPV status. Results: At diagnosis, the median age was 58.73. The ratio of men to women was 9:1. The percentages of cancer in the tonsils, base of the tongue, soft palate, posterior and lateral oropharyngeal wall, and soft palate were 56.6%, 30%, 6.7%, and 6.7%, in that order. 33.3% were in stages I and II, while 66.7% were in stages III and IV. Concurrent chemoradiotherapy (at 50%), radiation alone (30%), induction chemotherapy (16.7%), and surgery (at 3.3%) are the main treatment choices. 56,7% of patients were HR-HPV positive results, of which 100% was HPV16. Conclusion: 90% of patients were men. The tonsils were OPSCC's common site. 66.7% were in stages III and IV. The most typical primary treatment was chemoradiotherapy. Of the patients with OPSCC, 56.7% had HR-HPV infections, all of which were HPV16.
