CORRELATIONS BETWEEN THE LENGTH OF CRANIAL BASE AND OTHER STRUCTURES OF THE CRANIOFACIAL COMPLEX IN BOYS AND GIRLS FROM 7–13 YEARS OLD

Abstract
Objective: To determine correlation between the length of cranial base and other structures of craniofacial complex in boys and girls aged 7–13 years. Methods: Study samples were 691 cephalometric radiographs of 287 children from 7–13 years old. All study samples were taken by a sole radiology technician using one standard technique. The copies of cephalometric radiographs were produced on tracing paper to determine anatomical landmarks. Reference distances and angles were measured for collecting dimensional data of cranial base, maxilla, mandible, and facial heights. Data were statistically analyzed at a significance level of p < 0.05. Results: From 7 to 13 years of age, the dimensions of all craniofacial structures increased in both boys and girls. Regarding dimensions of craniofacial strutures, no significant difference was found between sexes, except for the facial heights. The facial heights of boys significantly higher than those of girls, starting from 9 years old. Significant correlations were found between the lengths of the cranial base and other structures of craniofacial complex during this period. Conclusion: Difference of dimensions of craniofacial patterns between sexes were only seen in facial heights. The lengths of anterior and posterior cranial base correlated to the growth of other structures of craniofacial complex.
