Abstract

Background: Hypoglycemia is a common complication of diabetes treatment and results in hospitalization. This study analysed costs of treating hypoglycemic patients with type 2 diabetes admitted at the Department of Endocrinology, Nguyen Tri Phuong Hospital. Method: Patients with type 2 diabetes were hospitalized due to hypoglycemia at the Department of Endocrinology, Nguyen Tri Phuong Hospital. Demographic characteristic and indirect costs were collected using face-to-face interview. Clinical and subclinical data were collected through medical records. Direct costs were based on hospital lists of expenses when patients discharged. Results: The sample engaged 97 patients with the mean age of 71.4 ± 12.9 years old. Women represented 67%. The duration of diabetes was 8.7 ± 8 years. The mean indirect costs for patients and their families due to lost wages during hospitalization were 1.8 million VND. A mean cost to transporting a patient to hospital was 385 thousand VND. A patient paid mean of 4.2 million VND for a course of treatment for hypoglycemia with mean hospital stay for 5.3 ± 3.2 days. The total mean costs for an episode of hypoglycemia were 6.2 million VND. Conclusion: It is necessary to have a prevention strategy and choose appropriate treatment regimens to minimize the risk of hypoglycemia, thereby reducing the treatment burden for patients.
