Abstract

Objectives: Determine of plasma PTH and total calcium in patients with differentiated thyroid cancer before and after thyroidectomy at Thai Nguyen National Hospital during the period of 2023-2024. Subjects and methods: A cross-sectional, with longitudinal follow-up of 65 patients diagnosed with differentiated thyroid cancer after thyroidectomy at Thai Nguyen National Hospital between April 2023 and April 2024. Results: The mean age of the patients was 45.5 years, with females comprising the majority (92.3%). Postoperative histopathological analysis predominantly revealed papillary thyroid carcinoma, accounting for 95.4% of cases. The majority of patients underwent total thyroidectomy (90.8%) and central neck dissection (66.2%), with an average surgical duration of 93.87 minutes. The fluctuations in PTH levels at preoperative, postoperative 1 day, and postoperative 1 month were 40.43 pg/mL, 19.84 pg/mL, and 36.41 pg/mL, respectively. Similarly, the fluctuations in total calcium levels at preoperative, postoperative 1 day, and postoperative 1 month were 2.31 mmol/l, 2.12 mmol/l, and 2.27 mmol/l, respectively. The highest incidence of postoperative hypocalcemia occurred on postoperative 1 day, accounting for 35.4% of cases. Conclusion: Following total thyroidectomy, plasma PTH and Calci total levels exhibited consistent reductions compared to preoperative levels (p<0.05). The most pronounced decreases were observed on postoperative 1 day, with partial recovery noted at 1 month postoperatively
