Abstract

Objective: to assess clinical characteristics and treatment outcomes of patients bitten by cobra treated with antivenom at Nghe An General Friendship Hospital. Subjects and methods: prospective study was conducted on 106 patients bitten by cobras (N. atra, N. kaouthia) from July 2022 to December 2023. Results: The average duration from bite to treatment was 5.29 ± 8.8 hours. There were 59 cases treated with antivenom, accounting for 56%. In the group of patients treated early, the dose of antivenom used was 10.2 ± 5.6 vials, treatment duration was 8.7 ± 6.9 days. In the group of patients treated late, the dose was 12.4 ± 9.5 vials, treatment duration was 15.6 ± 10.2 days. Treatment of antivenom reduced the circumference and distance of swelling with statistical significance, but the area of necrosis did not reduce. 9 cases had anaphylactic reactions after using antivenom. Conclusion: antivenom was safe and effective treatment in patients bitten by cobras, especially when patients were treated early.
