Abstract

Background: Hypertension is a leading cause of morbidity and mortality globally. The management of hypertension requires coordinated efforts that include strengthening the health system, providing financial health support, enhancing the quality of human resources, ensuring adequate medical equipment and medication, and offering comprehensive healthcare services. Primary healthcare systems play a crucial role in managing and treating hypertension. Objectives: 1. To determine the percentage of healthcare workers with adequate knowledge of hypertension treatment and management at health stations in Binh Duong province from 2023-2024. 2. To evaluate the outcomes of interventions aimed at improving knowledge on hypertension treatment and management for healthcare workers at health stations in a city, a district, and a town in Binh Duong province from 2023-2024. Materials and methods: For the first objective, a cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted involving 182 healthcare workers responsible for managing and treating hypertension at health stations in Binh Duong province, using a total sampling method. For the second objective, a comparative study was conducted pre- and post-intervention on 54 healthcare workers at health stations in the Bau Bang  district, Ben Cat town, and Tan Uyen city. Results: The percentage of healthcare workers with adequate knowledge of diagnosis and treatment was 70.9%, of management and counseling was 63.7%, and overall knowledge was 67.0%. Within the knowledge of diagnosis and treatment, the understanding of cardiovascular risk stratification and critical aspects of diagnosis and treatment was low, at 41.2% and 50.0% respectively. For management and counseling knowledge, the understanding of referral indications and principles of maintaining treatment was low, at 56.0% and 61.5% respectively. After the intervention, the percentage of healthcare workers with adequate knowledge of hypertension treatment and management significantly increased: knowledge of diagnosis and treatment (p<0.001; IEI: 57.6%), management and counseling knowledge (p<0.001; IEI: 112.9%), and overall knowledge (p<0.001; IEI: 80.9%). Conclusion: The percentage of healthcare workers with adequate knowledge of hypertension treatment and management was 67.0%. There is a need to focus on training to enhance management knowledge and specialized knowledge for healthcare workers.
