Abstract

Background: Oral cancer is a serious and growing health problem. Improved awareness of the risk factors and signs of oral cancer can help prevent and detect the disease early. The objective of the study is to evaluate the level of awareness of oral cancer among patients attending the dental clinic at Hue University of Medicine and Pharmacy hospital. Methods: Descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted on 314 patients. Patients are instructed to fill out a questionnaire about their awareness of risk factors and signs of oral cancer. The level of awareness was classified into "good knowledge" and "poor knowledge". Results: The proportion of patients with good knowledge about risk factors and signs of oral cancer is 47.1% and 41.4%, respectively. Age, education level, smoking, drinking alcohol, and advice from medical staff affect the patient's level of awareness about risk factors and signs of oral cancer (p<0.05). Conclusions: The level of awareness about risk factors and signs of oral cancer among dental patients is quite low. Dentist plays an important role in consulting and providing knowledge about oral cancer to patients.
