INITIAL RESULTS OF SURGICAL TREATMENT FOR THYROID CANCER IN CHILDREN AND ADOLESCENTS

Abstract

A retrospective, descriptive study on 30 children and adolescents with thyroid cancer, to determine some factors related to cervical lymph node metastasis and evaluate the initial results of surgical treatment at 108 Military Central Hospital, period from January 2018 to June 2022. Results: The mean of age was 15.6 ± 3.64 (10-18), women predominate, female/male ratio was 2.75/1. Papillary thyroid carcinoma accounts for the majority (93.3%), undifferentiated type accounts for 6.7%. Total thyroidectomy for 100% of patients. The lymph node dissection rate was 90.0%. The length of postoperative hospital stay was 6.8 ± 2.1 days. Postoperative complications rate was 6.6%. The proportion of patients with lymph node metastasis was 73.3%, with central neck lymph node metastasis accounting for a high proportion, accounting for 70.0%. The age group under 15 has a higher rate of neck lymph node metastasis (in both the central and lateral neck compartments), multifocal lesions increase the rate of lateral neck lymph node metastasis (p < 0 .05). Conclusion: Surgical treatment of thyroid cancer in children and adolescents was safe, with a low rate of postoperative complications (6.6%). The group of age under 15 had a higher rate of neck lymph node metastasis, multifocal lesions increase the rate of lateral neck lymph node metastasis (p < 0.05).
