Abstract

Objective: Identify the prevalence and severity of dental caries of 6 to 10 years in Duc Xuan primary school in Bac Kan city. Methods: Cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted on 700 students. Dental caries were examined and evaluated according to WHO (1997). Data were collected by indirect interview through questionnaires. The results showed that: 67.1% students were affected by caries in primary with the mean dmft was 5.06 ± 4.15 (of which 3.74 ± 3.80 decayed teeth, 1.10 ± 1.88 lost teeth and 0. 22 ± 0.81 filled teeth). 25.1% students were affected by caries in permanent teeth and the mean DMFT was 1.70 ± 2.13 (of which 1.51 ± 1.30 decayed teeth, 0.001 ± 0.08 lost teeth and 0 ,19 ± 0.73 filling teeth). The rate of primary tooth decay in the 6 - 8 year old group (79.9%) is higher than in the 9 - 10 year old group (41.2%). Permanent tooth decay tends to increase with age: from 18.1% in the 6-8 year old group to 47.1% in the 9-10 year old group. The incidence of primary tooth decay does not differ between boys and girls (p = 0.308). However, the rate of permanent tooth decay in boys is higher than that in girls, with a statistically significant difference with p = 0.021 (<0.05).
