Abstract

Background: Guillain - Barré syndrome is belonging to the group of peripheral neuropathies that causes the most common acute or subacute flaccid paralysis of the limbs and has many variations, making diagnosis and treatment difficult. Objective: Describe clinical and paraclinical characteristics and determine the rate of some risk factors of patients with Guillain - Barré syndrome. Research method: The study carried out a cross-sectional descriptive research method on 34 patients diagnosed and treated at Can Tho Central General Hospital. Results: Average age 56.74 ± 20.58. The ratio of men and women is 58.8% and 41.2%. Rural areas account for 79.4%. Clinical: limb weakness, paresthesia (97.1%), pain (88.2%) and reduced to loss of tendon reflexes in the upper and lower limbs (91.2% and 100%). The average MRC score was 37.47±11.16 and the average Hughes score was 3.44±0.82. There were 38.2% of previous respiratory infections. Protein dissociation of cerebrospinal fluid cells accounts for 70%. The axonal damage group accounts for 76.4% compared to AIDP, which accounts for 20.6%. Conclusion: The disease occurs in all ages, is higher in men than in women and higher in rural areas than in urban areas. Patients with predominant axonal damage. The most common clinical symptoms are limb weakness, paresthesias, pain, reduced or absent tendon reflexes. Paraclinical evidence is shown by cytolytic protein dissociation in cerebrospinal fluid and abnormal electrical conduction in electromyography.
