NUTRITIONAL STATUS AND RELATED FACTORS AMONG GERIATRIC PATIENTS BEING TREATMENT AT HUE UNIVERSITY OF MEDICINE AND PHARMACY HOSPITAL

Abstract

Background: The nutritional status of the elderly is increasingly a matter of concern. Poor nutritional status significantly affects the physical and psychological health of the elderly, increases the risk of illness and death, and negatively affects the quality of life. This study was conducted to determine the prevalence of malnutrition according to the MNA tool and to learn about related factors among elderly patients at Hue University of Medicine and Pharmacy Hospital. Research subjects and methods: Cross-sectional descriptive study on 400 elderly inpatients at the Hue University of Medicine and Pharmacy Hospital from October 1, 2022 to May 31, 2023. Nutritional status was assessed according to the MNA - SF scale, depression was assessed according to the GDS - 30 scale, and the rate of appetite loss was determined using the CNAQ scale. Results: The rate of malnutrition in elderly patients according to the MNA tool is 12.8%. Factors related to malnutrition are smoking, eating alone, decreased appetite, and depression (p < 0.05). Conclusion: Elderly patients with malnutrition are still so high, so it is necessary to encourage patients to practice a healthy lifestyle such as quitting smoking and at the same time propagate so that family members and caregivers can have solutions. Measures to improve the nutritional status of patients such as increasing meals with the family, and detecting and treating early signs of depression.
