Abstract

Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) can have serious consequences for the health of mother and fetus if not detected, controlled and treated promptly. The current study aimed to understand the emotional reactions of pregnant women and their families when pregnant women are diagnosed with GDM in Thai Binh province. Our research was conducted using a qualitative research method using case studies: in-depth interviews were carried out with 21 pregnant women with GDM and their relatives. The research was conducted from April to May 2023 in Thai Binh province. Research results documented the women’s emotional reactions to the diagnosis, highlighting how many women felt confused, worried and scared when diagnosed with gestational diabetes. The research also showed that family members often reacted in other ways than the women, paying less attention to the disease and seeing it as a temporary condition without serious implications for mother or child
