Abstract

Objectives: To describe home health care needs and ability to pay for home health care of the elderly in Phu Vang district, Thua Thien Hue province and identify some associated factors with home health care needs. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted on 637 people aged 60 or older in Phu Vang district, Thua Thien Hue province from November 2022 to June 2023. We performed face-to-face interviews with prepared questionnaires to investigate the home care needs and ability to pay of the participants. Data were analyzed using SPSS (Version 20.0) software. Research was ethically by the University Medicine and Pharmacy, Hue university. Results: The prevalence of home health care needs was found to be 45,1%. The majority of the elderly were unable to pay for home health care services. The multivariable logistic regression model identified the associated factors with home health care needs as follows: being age 80 years or older (OR=5.39; 95% CI: 2.95 - 9.85), average monthly income greater than 1,500,000 VNĐ (OR=1.95; 95% CI: 1.32- 2.89), having chronic diseases (OR=3.06; 95% CI: 1.72 - 5.45), visiting private medical facilities regularly (OR=3.92; 95% CI: 1.53 - 10.06), low social support (OR=4.17; 95% CI: 1.82 - 9.51) and hospital treatment within the previous 12 months (OR=7.62; 95% CI: 4.81 - 12.06). Conclusion: The need for home health care among the elderly was rather high, but their payment ability for the qualified services still limited. Therefore, in addition to spreading the home health care model for the elderly, it is necessary to implement health insurance with a payment policy and create a service application model that fits their financial circumstances.
