Abstract

Introduction: Skin manifestations in various musculoskeletal disorders can be early signs indicating the disease. Hence, this emphasizes the importance of assessing dermatological conditions in the rheumatic disease patient group. Objective: To determine the prevalence of skin diseases among patients with musculoskeletal disorders at Nguyen Tri Phuong Hospital, Ho Chi Minh City. Study Design and Methods: A cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted on 391 patients with musculoskeletal disorders at the Rheumatology Department of Nguyen Tri Phuong Hospital, Ho Chi Minh City, from February 2022 to August 2022. Results: Among the 391 patients with musculoskeletal disorders, 290 patients had skin diseases (74.2%). Skin diseases often preceded musculoskeletal disorders (47.6%) or their onset timing was unclear (42.4%). Of the 65 patients with distinctive dermatological signs, 52 patients had skin manifestations (80%). There was a statistically significant difference in the prevalence of skin diseases and their timing between the group with distinctive dermatological signs and the rest. Conclusion: Evaluating dermatological conditions is crucial for early detection of progressive musculoskeletal disorders or assisting in the diagnosis of skin-joint related diseases. Multidisciplinary collaboration between Rheumatology and Dermatology departments can shorten diagnosis time and improve treatment outcomes.
