Abstract

Background: Splanchnic vein thrombosis is commonly observed in various risk groups with diverse clinical manifestations and lacks standardized treatment guidelines. Objectives: This study aims to investigate the clinical characteristics, laboratory tests and treatment of patients with splanchnic vein thrombosis. Subjects and Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted. The subjects were patients diagnosed with splanchnic vein thrombosis at the University Medical Center Ho Chi Minh City from October 1, 2021, to June 30, 2023. Results: Among the 358 patients, the average age was 58.1 years, and males accounted for 76.8%. Asymptomatic thrombosis was present in 24.9% of cases; the most common symptom was abdominal pain, occurring in 58.4% of patients. The most frequent risk factors were cancer (66.5%) and cirrhosis (54.7%). Hypercoagulability assessments were not consistently performed. The most common thrombosis sites were the portal vein (81.8%) and the superior mesenteric vein (19.6%). Thrombosis was untreated in 81.6% of cases. Anticoagulants were used in 18.4% of patients, primarily vitamin K antagonists. Conclusions: Splanchnic vein thrombosis is more prevalent in males and presents with a wide range of symptoms from asymptomatic to ischemic bowel necrosis. Thrombosis frequently occurs in patients with cirrhosis and abdominal cancer. The treatment rate for thrombosis remains low
