Abstract

Background: Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is one of the most common respiratory diseases and a leading cause of death. Malnutrition (MN) is a common issue in COPD patients, increasing the risk of complications and mortality. This study was conducted to survey the prevalence of malnutrition and related factors in outpatients with COPD at Ba Ria Hospital. Objective: To determine the malnutrition rates and factors associated with social population characteristics and pathological characteristics in patients with COPD at Ba Ria Hospital in 2022. Method: The cross-sectional study described 235 patients examined at Ba Ria Hospital's Examination Department, conducted from April 2022 to October 2022. Subjects were interviewed using a prepared questionnaire to collect information about social population characteristics, pathological characteristics. Results: Results showed that the prevalence of malnutrition according to body mass index (BMI) was 20%, and subjective global assessment (SGA) was 28,5%. Factors such as age, gender, severity, and the number of exacerbations per year are associated with the nutritional status of patients, with p<0.05. Conclusion: The study indicates that the assessment and management of nutrition in outpatients with COPD are necessary, as up to 1/3 of these patients suffer from malnutrition and require nutritional intervention.
