Abstract

We conducted a study with the goal of describing the current status of treatment adherence among patients with bipolar disorder treated at the Institute of Mental Health - Bach Mai Hospital. This is a cross-sectional study which included 121 patients with bipolar disorder at the National Institute of Mental Health - Bach Mai Hospital. The results showed that patients had an average age of 41.78 ± 15.77 years, most were women (59.5%), and they had a high level of non-adherence. The proportion of low adherence was 36.4% and medium adherence was 19.8%. The average adherence score according to the Morisky scale was 5.63 ± 2.83 (0 – 8). The reasons for stopping medication among poor adherence patients were mainly due to adverse effect reactions (56.4%), forgetting to take medication when going out, going to work or being too busy (46.2%) and running out of medicine (41.3%). From the results, it can be seen that it is necessary to improve education about disease awareness and to practice treatment adherence for patients with bipolar disorder.
