Abstract

Objectives: To describe the clinical and paraclinical characteristics and to determine the prevalence of depression and anxiety in patients with chronic lower extremity arterial occlusive disease (CLEAOD). Methods: A descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted on 77 inpatients at the University Medical Center Ho Chi Minh City, using the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS). Results: The median age was 71 years (65-76), with males accounting for 71.43%. The prevalence of depression and anxiety was 25.97% and 23.38%, respectively. Among the cases of depression, mild, moderate, and severe levels accounted for 60%, 25%, and 15%, respectively. Similarly, mild, moderate, and severe levels of anxiety accounted for 77.78%, 16.67%, and 5.55%, respectively. Conclusions: Patients with CLEAOD were predominantly male and were admitted for treatment after complications such as ulcers and limb necrosis had developed. The prevalence of depression and anxiety in these patients was significantly higher than in the general population. The implementation of comprehensive mental health care programs is crucial for timely treatment and improving the quality of life for these patients.
