Main Article Content
Abstract
Epilepsy surgery brings significant improvements in clinical symptoms and quality of life for patients. Objective: to describe the quality of life of patients after epilepsy surgery at Viet Duc University Hospital. Subjects and methods: a cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted on all 45 patients who underwent epilepsy surgery from 2021 to 2023. The QOLIE-31 (Quality of Life in Epilepsy Inventory 31 items) scale was used to assess the quality of life of patients with epilepsy post-surgery. Results: the average overall quality of life score for patients was 72.5 ± 18.0 points. 75.6% of patients had an overall quality of life score of 60 points or higher. The seizure worry subscale had the lowest score at 53.3 ± 21.3 points, followed by the medication effects worry subscale at 72.2 ± 24.8 points. The cognitive function subscale had the highest score at 75.6 ± 22.1 points. The frequency of seizures and the number of antiepileptic drugs used post-surgery decreased compared to pre-surgery (p<0.05). Conclusion: The quality of life of epilepsy patients after surgery has an average score of 72.5 ± 18.0 points; the seizure worries and medication effects worry subscales have the lowest quality of life scores. Therefore, interventions targeting the seizure worry and medication effects worry subscales are necessary to improve the overall quality of life for patients.
