THE INITIAL EFFICACY EVALUATION OF A PORCINE-DERIVED ACELLULAR DERMAL MATRIX (MUCODERM) IN THE TREATMENT OF THE PERI-IMPLANT SOFT TISSUE AUGMENTATION IN ANTERIOR TEETH REGION
Main Article Content
Abstract
Background: The peri-implant soft tissue plays a crucial role not only aesthetically but also in the long-term survival of the implants. Thus, increasing evidence supports the augmentation of the peri-implant soft tissue. Objectives: The study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of mucoderm, a novel porcine-derived collagen matrix has recently been proposed, in augmenting peri-implant soft tissue in the anterior teeth region. Materials and methods: A case series study including 16 subjects underwent implant restoration in the anterior teeth region who were appointed and agreed to have mucoderm grafting surgery at EMCAS Cosmetic Surgery Hospital from June 2023 to March 2024. Results: A total of 16 participants were included, with an mean age of 56.6 ± 9.3, and a male-to-female ratio of approximately 4.5:1. Notable clinical features including the primary reasons for tooth loss being periodontal disease and caries, with an mean duration of tooth loss of 3.3 ± 2.5 years, primarily affecting the anterior and lateral incisors. The main findings indicated a significant improvement in keratinized mucosa thickness around implant post-surgery (all p < 0.001), with an average increase after 3 months was 0,7 ± 0,4 mm. The shrinkage rates of mucosa post-surgery 1-month and 3-month were 25.4 ± 21.5% và 42.7 ± 17.8% (p < 0,001), respectively. However, there were no meaningfully changes in mucosa width or distance from the zenith to the incisal edge after 3 months (p > 0.05). The average PES score at the end of follow-up was not significantly higher than before surgery (6.4 ± 2.2 versus 6.2 ± 2.0, p = 0.083). Post-operative bleeding control and pain were also evaluated. The average pain scores immediately post-surgery and one week post-surgery were 2.7 ± 1.2 and 0.4 ± 0.5, respectively (p < 0.001). The majority of subjects did not experience bleeding post-surgery (81.3%). Conclusion: The study initially shows that mucoderm grafting surgery is effective and safe in the peri-implant soft tissue augmentation, particularly in terms of thickness. The method promises to be a potential option for both doctors and patients in the field of peri-implant soft tissue restoration.
