Abstract

Background: The prevalence of colonic diverticula is rising in eastern countries. Little is known about the distribution of colonic diverticula, their causes, and their asscociated characteristics. Vietnam has not had many studies on this issue. Therefore, we designed this study to determine the incidence and characteristics of colon diverticulosis in Vietnamese people. Aims: We aimed to assess the number, location, and characteristics of colonic diverticula in Vietnamese people undergoing colonoscopy at Tam Anh General Hospital, Ho Chi Minh city. Materials and methods: Prospective description of 685 patients diagnosed with colonic diverticula by endoscopy (average age 55,8), screened at Tam Anh General Hospital, Ho Chi Minh City from October 1, 2023 - December 31, 2023. Results: The incidence of diverticula in men is much higher than in women (1.9/1), the average age of diagnosis is 55.8 years with the majority of diverticula distributed mainly in the ascending colon. Most patients have 1-4 diverticula. The location of diverticula as well as the number are related to age. Conclusions: Data show that the incidence of colonic diverticula in Vietnam is increasing, as are other colon disease cases. Therefore, colon diverticulosis and its complications will become an increasingly important medical problem in Vietnam in the future.
