Abstract

Introduction: Acute kidney injury is a common complication of acute pancreatitis. The serum NGAL biomarker changes with the presence of acute kidney injury in acute pancreatitis. Subjects and methods: A cross-sectional descriptive study of 51 patients with acute pancreatitis and acute kidney injury, 168 patients with acute pancreatitis without kidney injury, and 35 healthy individuals as a control group, from December 2021 to September 2023. Results: The serum NGAL levels in the acute pancreatitis group with kidney injury were higher than in the group without kidney injury and significantly higher than in the healthy control group (p<0.01). NGAL levels increased progressively with the severity of kidney injury. The serum NGAL levels in acute pancreatitis patients with kidney injury were associated with the Balthazar scoring system for acute pancreatitis, pancreatic necrosis, and the severity of acute pancreatitis. Conclusion: Elevated serum NGAL levels are associated with the severity of acute pancreatitis.
