Abstract

The study was conducted to evaluate the condition and factors related to malnutrition in a group of chronic heart failure patients treated at the Vietnam National Heart Institute, therefore the treatment strategy can be optimized. Results: Among 108 patients (Male: 60.2%, Female: 39.8%) the average age was 62.06 ± 14.73 years. Patients from urban areas with an education level of secondary school or less account for 72.2%. The majority of subjects had the disease for 1 to 3 years, accounting for 63.0%; Among them, subjects with difficulty breathing level II according to NYHA accounted for the highest proportion with 78.7%, with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF ≥ 50%) accounting for the majority (75.9%). The proportion of subjects not using drugs to treat heart failure is up to 64.8%. Hypertension is the comorbidity with the highest rate (34.3%). Malnutrition was determined by the Mini Nutritional Assessment (MNA) score of 78.7%. Additionally, 51.8% of patients were physically inactive (51.9%). Conclusion: Age, gender, time of disease detection, physical activity and ejection fraction index are related to the possibility of malnutrition in chronic heart failure patients (p < 0.05). In the treatment strategy, it is necessary to have interventions to prevent malnutrition to help reduce prognosis, reduce mortality and improve
