Abstract
Children are not just miniature adults; they are growing and developing bodies. Nutrition is a window of opportunity and health programming factor for children because it not only affects at the time of intervention but can also have lifelong effects in many different aspects. Objective: Describe the nutritional status of children from 06 - 59 months old diagnosed with pneumonia receiving inpatient treatment at the Department of Pediatric Respiratory Medicine, Saint Paul General Hospital in 2023 - 2024. Subjects and methods: A cross-sectional descriptive study of 158 mother-child pairs of children aged 06-59 months diagnosed with pneumonia treated inpatient at the Department of Pediatric Respiratory Medicine, Saint Paul General Hospital from June 2023 to February 2024. Data were collected using a pre-built questionnaire. Children were assessed for nutritional status, calculated Z-score weight/age (W/A), height/age (H/A), weight/height (W/H) using WHO's Anthro software in 2006. Results: Of the 158 children included in the study, we found the age group 12 to 23 months constituted the highest rate at 36.7%. The proportion of male children using the rate was higher than that of girls at 58.2%. The results showed that 51/158 children (32.2%) encountered malnutrition problems such as underweight, stunting, wasting and/or overweight/obesity, accounting for 1/3 of the children participating in the study. Among them, stunting accounted for the highest rate (13.3%); Next was wasting malnutrition (11.4%) equivalent to the rate of overweight and obese children (11.4%) classified according to W/H index and the lowest was underweight malnutrition (3.8%).
