Abstract

Abstract: This study aims to investigate the prevalence of sarcopenia and associated factors such as age, gender, BMI, polypharmacy, hypertension, diabetes mellitus, chronic kidney disease, and frailty in elderly patients attending the geriatric clinic at the University Medical Center Ho Chi Minh City. Objectives and Methods: A cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted on 177 elderly patients attending the geriatric clinic at the University Medical Center Ho Chi Minh City. Results: Of the 177 elderly patients, 70.6% were female, and 29.4% were male, with an average age of 69.88 ± 6.48 years. The prevalence of sarcopenia in elderly patients was 38.4%. The highest risk of sarcopenia was observed in patients aged ≥80 years, those who were overweight, had hypertension, chronic kidney disease, and frailty. Conclusion: It is necessary to conduct regular screening for early diagnosis of sarcopenia in elderly patients attending the clinic, especially those with risk factors such as advanced age, overweight/obesity, hypertension, chronic kidney disease, and frailty.
