PREVALENCE OF MENTAL HEALTH ISSUES AND DEMAND FOR MENTAL HEALTH SUPPORT AMONG PHARMACY STUDENTS

Abstract
Background: Mental health problems are currently an urgent issue with an increasing prevalence in the community, especially among healthcare students. This study aimed to determine the prevalence of mental health problems and the demand for mental health services among pharmacy students of University of Medicine and Pharmacy at Ho Chi Minh City (UMP), as well as their demand for mental health support. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted using an anonymous, self-administered survey using DASS-21 questionnaire on pharmacy students at UMP from October to December 2023. Results: Among 803 responders, the rates of stress, anxiety, and depression were 49.2%, 58.5%, and 52.4%, respectively.. The most common stress coping strategies were recreational pursuits (37.0%), seeking help from family (30.0%) or friends (20%). Besides, 95.1% students acknowledged the necessity of mental health support program at the university. Conclusion: The high prevalence of mental health problems among pharmacy students warrants the importance of providing mental health support for pharmacy students at UMP.
